Adolescent and Teen Therapy

Keeping up with physical and emotional changes as an adolescent or a teen, along with peer pressure and academic challenges can be extremely stressful.  Parents are often unsure of how to help when they are seeing signs of risky and erratic behavior.  Our goal is to help each adolescent and teen learn healthier ways of coping with concerns related to family, peers, and world challenges.

Some changes that you might start to see:

  • Lack of interest in activities they once enjoyed
  • Becoming more isolated and generally don’t leave their room
  • Struggling with anxiety, depression, or bullying
  • Having a hard time making or keeping friends
  • Spending all their time on social media/phone

How do you find the best fit therapist for your teen?

Both our North Richland Hills/Keller location and our Southwest fort Worth location offer teen therapy.  If your teen is hesitant to do counseling, try to get them involved in the process of picking a therapist as much as possible.  You can do some research beforehand that fit your criteria such as insurance, location, budget, etc.  Once you have it pinned down to 3-4 therapists, allow your teen to review the information so that they can ultimately make the final decision. Allowing them to take control of who they will see may help them feel more confident and comfortable easing in teh first few sessions.  When doing your research, make sure you consider factors such as male vs. female, age of therapist, and specific backgrounds each therapist might specialize in.  For more information, check out our FAQ for Teen Therapy.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

In addition to Teen Therapy, Healing First Counseling offers Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT).  PCIT helps with behavioral concerns, difficulty following parent directions, impulse control and more.

What is PCIT?  PCIT is designed for caregivers and their young children ages 2-7.  Parents can learn the tools to model behavior, create a warm, supportive relationship, and learn behavior management skills.  PCIT has been successful in treating emotional and behavioral disorders in children, including:

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Conduct Disorder
  • Anxiety Disorder
