About Us

Welcome to Healing First Counseling!

Damla Ricks

Lead Therapist and Founder at Healing First Counseling

Healing First Counseling is a safe, nonjudgmental and supportive place!

I am Damla Ricks and I am passionate about working with couples, families, parents, adolescents, and teens. I believe that a therapeutic alliance and connection is imperative. I strive to create a supportive and non-judgmental space that allows for my clients to feel secure and comfortable that facilitates healing.

As a Gottman Level 1 certified therapist with specialized training in TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), I use a holistic approach to create an authentic environment that helps my clients feel safe and at ease. I work with clients who struggle with trauma, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal conflict.

Aside from completing my studies at Texas A&M Commerce and receiving my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I have 13 years of experience in higher education. I have taught a variety of Communication Studies courses such as: Interpersonal Communication, Relational Development, Business and Professional Communication and Interview Principles.

Prior to my time in private practice, I have worked in non-profit organizations such as Children’s Advocacy Center and Metrocare. I find it important to spend time in a community setting to help those who may need intensive services.

When I am not in session, you’ll find me spending quality time with my partner and stepson, reading or training in new counseling topics. I am incredibly passionate about what I do. I especially enjoy working with blended families and people who are just trying to find themselves.

I built this practice because I wanted to create a safe space for people from all walks of life. No matter what background, sexual orientation, religious affiliations, or race, please understand that you are accepted just the way you are.

Stacey Rowcliffe

LPC Associate at Healing First Counseling

Supervised by Jennifer Kruse, LPC-S

Let me be the first to welcome you on your healing journey, where you stop just “surviving” and learn how to “thrive” .

I’m Stacey and I can’t wait to help!  As a parent of two amazing young adult children, I understand how difficult navigating this world can be for both adolescents, parents, couples and families.  My children are without a doubt, my best work on this earth, but our journey wasn’t without struggles.  Both my son and daughter were diagnosed with chronic health conditions during elementary school.  I can tell you first-hand that YOUR struggles will make you stronger and are only part of your story not the whole picture.

As a Cognitive Behavior Therapist (CBT), with specialized training in TF-CBT (trauma-focused, cognitive behavioral therapy), I integrate play therapy, sandtray, trauma sensitive yoga, mindfulness, meditation, motivational interviewing, person-centered, emotion focused, gestalt, humanistic, experiential, and psychodynamic approaches. I also provide psychoeducation regarding self-esteem, bullying, emotional awareness, and regulation. I am a strong advocate for self-care, boundaries, and attention to one’s own healing journey.

My experience and training over the last 10 years has been diverse working with adolescents, adults, couples and families; focused in the areas of assessment, research and therapy. I have enjoyed working in a variety of settings including behavioral schools, inpatient clinics, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation clinics, and private practices. My clinical experience involves work in the areas of: ADHD, Autism, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Learning Disorders, Language Disorders, Gifted Children, and Chronic Health Conditions. I have received training in parent child interaction therapy (PCIT) and therapeutic parenting time using “bug in the ear” technology.

I obtained my Masters in Clinical Psychology from Capella University and I am currently working towards my doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at National Louis University with special interests in neuro-science and neuropsychology.

I believe that bridge between science, psychology and behavior is such an important piece of the puzzle when implementing real healing, change, and growth. When I’m not helping others heal, I enjoy spending time with my family and our little pug “Razor,” working out, practice yoga, paddleboarding, and wandering to adventurous places. Whatever you are seeking in your healing journey, I hope you take time to reflect on these two quotes: “Healing doesn’t mean the pain never existed.  It means the damage no longer controls our lives”; “If you don’t make time for your wellness you will be forced to make time for your illness’
